Returning to the Joy of Flight

·

Aside from my interest in imaging and microscopy, I am an avid lover of all things involving flight. One of the big problems in the world of aviation is the daunting task of acquiring a pilot’s certificate, and the other is the regulation and compliance requirements of aircraft ownership. Now of course regulation in some ways encourages safety, but there are a lot of people who are new to this world, who are scared away from the responsibilities, and they end up never being able to experience the freedom, joy and peace of flying. After owning my airplane for 3 years, and commuting in it multiple days per week, I’ve become very familiar with the regs, and have found them in most cases to be well thought out, and well employed. On the other hand, for the owner of an aircraft who only flies for pleasure, this can be too much work just to get out there and buzz around. So what is the solution? Enter Light sport. The light sport certification for pilots and aircraft is for 2 seat only, rather lightweight and rather slow aircraft. The idea being that a person can acquire a license and an aircraft for a low cost and time investment, and still enjoy the dream of flight. In this category there is no cooler or more capable aircraft, than the Icon A-5. This airplane puts it all together, and I am chomping at the bit for the day when I can fly in one. In the meantime, here’s a video of the company owner flying the A-5. This company has got a great marketing team, as this video is just awesome!!!
