I keep getting asked this so I figured I’d write up a how-to. When using a sutter wheel it may be necessary to remove, replace add or reposition filters in your wheel. A good example is repositioning filters to provide the best wheel balance, in order to improve wheel positioning speed. Another (more common) example is figuring out the filters in the wheel after the computer blows up and all of the software settings are lost! In any case:
Tools Required:
1. MUST have the Sutter install/removal tool. Yes you can get inventive and use a circlip plier set, but you can also EASILY damage your filters with that method, so use the right tool for the job!
2. method of removing the access cover(s) on the wheel. Ideally a large flathead screwdriver, or the less ideal but functional car key, small allen wrench used at an angle, quarter etc.
Precautions:
– Wear Gloves. You don’t want to touch the filters!
– Before completing installation of the cover, use compressed, filtered air to blow away any particulate matter generated by the removal/installation of filters.
– When in doubt don’t force things (good rule for almost every microscope service item!)

– Install is the inverse of removal, be sure to hit that installed filter position with some air before moving to the next position or closing up the cover!
